I ended up getting a cold sore about 4 weeks ago and I'd heard that it wasn't a good idea to go tanning while you have one. So I took a break from going to the salon, I was a little burnt out on going all the time anyway. Finally my cold sore was gone, just a slight red mark was left and it was disappearing also, so I decided to start going tanning again. 3 days in and I have a new cold sore in the same place! Could this be because I started tanning while there was still a little redness? And is it actually bad if I continue to tan while I have this new cold sore? I've seen mixed answers all over the internet.

Several years ago, I started getting cold sores when I would tan. I noticed it when I would start tanning for the summer. I have always tanned year round, but I would usually take a break for about six weeks and start up again in mid to late April. The only thing that really helped me, was slathering my lips in Aquaphor prior to tanning and also using Abreva for cold sores. I never did have any problems after that. I always make sure to put on some sort of lip stuff with SPF in it prior to tanning.
I'm not sure if what I did will work for you, but I know some people, the UV light triggers the cold sores.

Yes! 325i has the perfect cure.... my Sister In Law does the same thing every spring summer when she tans...
what happened was the area hadn't healed the entire way so some abreva or strong SPF should have been put on the spot... My SIL can't tan at all without using a SPG stick on her lips like chap stick....

They didn't have that kind of Aquaphor when I had that problem, I used the regular healing ointment, it comes in a tub as well as a small tube. However, the lip protect looks good because it has the SPF in it too! I would try that.

Not to change the subject really off topic, but it's kinda related since we are talking about places we should cover up while tanning...
Do you think I should cover up my knees if they are scraped?

I tanned while I had a cut on my arm from work, I feel like it wasn't bad enough to leave a mark, but now, a year later I have a scar from it. This is just my experience though, maybe someone else has some input on it..

Thank you. I might just cover them up just to be safe.

I've seen mixed answers all over the internet. Get something specifically made for cold sores. Do not apply anything with your bare finger. You can spread it to your finger, eyes, ears, skin wounds, or "the downstairs". Cold sores usually break out in the same place when they are viral. Do you know the UVB output percentage of your bed? I have read that base beds vs. high pressure tend to create more skin problems in general for a lot of people.

I've had this same problem and I always wear lip balm with SPF in it before I tan. No exceptions. I slather it on thick too. When I do that, I have no problems.

I have had this problem before and I think its definitely linked to tanning. I cover my face while in the tanning bed and still got a cold sore or two over a period of a couple of months. I realised to prevent it I need to put an spf chap stick on my lips even when my face is covered. If I do this, I dont get cold sores. Important if you are tanning for an event!
