Does anyone have experience tanning while breastfeeding? I know that I need to avoid tingle lotions around my baby. Anything else? Ingredients in lotions I should avoid? I know I'll need to drink extra water to compensate for any water loss. My aunt recently gave me a tanning bed. Now I'm just waiting on my new house to be completed so I can move the tanning bed in. Well complete enough that I can move it on. I can't wait to tan again. It's been too long.

Other than avoiding tanning lotions that the baby should not be ingesting (I am not knowledgeable on what ingredients)I can't think of any issues. You of course do not want to burn your nipples, because that's going to make breastfeeding uncomfortable for you, besides the fact that we NEVER want to burn any body part. It's been a long time, but I am (was) a very supportive nursing Dad. (My children are now 26 and 29 years old). When they were infants, my wife (Theresa), breast fed both of our children (8 months and a year respectively). Theresa was a nursing counselor (volunteer) and we would get all kinds of nursing questions at our house from people. I occasionally would answer the phone and get one of these nursing mom in need calls. If Theresa was not home, I would offer information if they wanted it from me (I read all the Nursing Mom Counselor educational material) or have Theresa call when she got back (yes, this was before cell phones). Some of the Moms, let me give them the info. I like to be helpful, but not pushy. Anyway, a bit off track - I ramble at 4 AM when I first wake up.... maybe I always ramble..... Anyway, unfortunately I have no real helpful information to your specific question about lotion ingredients to avoid. BPA is in almost everything (lotions, moisterizes, plastic soup can liners). Bisiphinol-A (BPA)is a plastic softener and is a public health issue for everyone, long term. It is used in many lotions (non tanning for sure) and food wrappers, etc., so the population's blood level all have a measurable and increasing amount of BPA. BPA is a hormone disrupter, think thyroid, pancreas, puberty, and menstrual cycles, Yea, kind of important and a known public health issue. So - now that I remembered about BPA, that. I'd keep that in mind. Check out if you can find out at all, if our indoor tanning lotions have BPA in them. It absorbs into our skin and gets into our blood and then whatever it does to us. I believe the scientific community is not in 100% agreement on the harms of BPA. I'm personally pretty sure it is bad for us to have it building up in everyone's blood. So, back to nursing.... Theresa's doctor always recommended that she use Eucerin (cream) on her stretch marks and nipples (when she was nursing last in 1988-1989). So, I ASSUME it is safe for baby. BUT Again, I would see if you can find out if it has BPA in it first. If Eucerin or some other moisturizer is a "GO" (no BPA), I would use that on your nipples, where the baby is nursing and NOT any other lotion, tanning or otherwise. Let me add, I AM NOT a DOCTOR. I CAN NOT give medical advice. The above is all from memory of past public health research I have done or my personal opinion. If anything I have said is useful to you, please do your "Due Diligence" and find out for sure through your own research or consult your own family pediatrician/physician.

Everything aeroguy said. I would cover my area and not use any lotions, before, during or after. I also think there is a site where you can look-up the chems in the lotions and it will tell you how "safe" they are and if they can be absorbed into the body, hence passing to the milk. One is called Truth in aging.
We put all kinds of chems on our bodies and they are amazing at filtering out a lot. Good luck!

That's awesome that you and your wife volunteered your time to help moms. It can be a stressful time if you don't have the right info. I'll definitely avoid burns. I've steered clear of parabens and any lotions/perfumes with chemicals since I found out I was pregnant. I'll definitely look up ingredients.
