As many of you know I work at a tanning salon and have been there for 7 months now. I just found out today that I'm on probation because I tanned somebody for 12 minutes and apparently they got burnt so bad that they had blisters. I understand that it's a big deal to be burnt that bad but when they request full time and they pay for it go ahead. But common sense should tell you to get out if you're getting to hot or feel your skin tightening. Would you guys quit or just wait it out?

Wow! First off, don't make any rash decisions right now, based on your anger. Let is sit for a minute, I've made decisions based on feelings of anger before and regretted it. Do you otherwise like your job there? And have they been unfair before? If I remember correctly, aren't they the same salon that forced you to limit your tanning because of "bad influence?" I guess I agree, it's crap to put you on probation based on that, I mean how many people are seemingly pale and can go max time, or dark from a self tanner and capable of burning? I've lied to tanning salon employees before so I could go max time, how are you supposed to know? And then, you tell them they can't and the assholes call and witch at a manager for that! Anyway, it seems like this irate customer was freaking out and they just looked to putting you on probation as "see, we're doing something." To the customer. I'd honestly tell you if I thought you were being irresponsible, like if you said "guys I let my friend tan twice, they found out about it and fired me" etc, I'd tell you well you made your bed. Personally; I just don't feel you were to blame. Long story short, only you can decide if this is the last straw really. Wanna hear some more opinions on it from others tho too.

And they didn't complain about until a whole month later! I just don't get it. Since we are a franchise I'm considering his switching salons because this is the only one that is like this. Thank you for the advice

Yeah that's definitely effed up to say the least, that they didn't complain for over a month. Like, how does something that "extreme" slip your mind for over a month???

If you had told someone not to tan because they weren't ready for max time, they would have complained about that too. You can't win either way. I'm sure others will disagree, but I've always been of the mind that my body is my responsibility. The first time I went tanning, I researched ahead of time so that when I went in, I told them that I wanted to start at 5 minutes. I'm not going to leave my wellbeing up to anybody else. Again, my body, my responsibility.

Did you end up quitting? And what franchise is this? I think its some bull crap that they would put you on "probation" for some idiot wanting max time that couldn't handle it. Idk how dark they were or the exact situation but when I signed my mom up for a package she has just self tanned a few days before and was dark! The girl who signed her up had no idea that wasn't real and suggest 10 min in a 12 when really she was white as paper underneath. So no it's not your fault and I think its silly that lady would wait a whole month to complain that means she sat and thought on it for awhile and prolly had someone in her ear telling her she could get something for free if she complained. If there's another franchise near you I would consider applying and seeing if you get hired before you quit, but if you make good money and should be off probation soon and know its the right thing to do then I'd stay,

I ended up not being on probation after I made some valid points and a pretty heated conversation with my district manager. I am staying for now but there's no other franchises near me except a palm beach which is about a hour and half drive. There's only one other tanning salon in town that's mom and pop and only family run

Good for you for standing your ground! I think that they were trying to find a reason to get rid of you. I would not leave easily. If you know your stuff then stand your ground and show your employers how intelligent and well versed you are regarding tanning.

Ugh, I hate to see this. I can't believe there aren't many tanning salons where you live besides STC and the mom & pop salon you mentioned. I think it's pretty lame that someone complained. I would just keep on trucking there but keep an eye out for other job opportunities, whether they are tanning related or not. When I first started tanning at STC, one of the girls begged me not to do the full time in the Soltron Seashell and I promised her it would be fine. She told me she might get into trouble if I burned and I promised her that if I did burn, it would totally be my fault and not hers. Common sense would tell ANYONE to get the hell out of the bed if they feel themselves starting to burn.

It sucks cuz people who don't know any better ruin it for everyone else. And my salon evidently has a stupid policy that when bulbs are new you can't go FT the first time even when you're brown. đđđ idk I think maybe that was just what one silly girl told me. I wish there were no 'max times,' or that the cut off was like 40 minutes and have people sign a waiver lol. I know I'm crazy. But seriously most of us lay out for hours and there's no difference. I miss my old salon with the hot bulbs and 30 min base beds âšī¸
