When I was a teen, we didn't have any choice but to tan outside, lol, yes I'm old. But my 15 year old daughter is wanting to start tanning, one of her friends who's 14 tans so I can't use the "it's illegal if you're under 18" excuse anymore. Do you think it's ok to let her?

Oh lord. I started some time in middle school, so 12 or 13. That's terrible, I know. Lol. But here in the south, it's normal. I'm 22 now, and expecting a daughter in the next few weeks, but idk at what age I'll let her tan. I'd say high school age is ok, given that she's careful and doesn't burn. Also keep an eye on moles and the like!

I did for a few months around age 17. Then I didn't tan again until I was 25. I honestly think younger than 18 is too young--yes, even considering what I did when I was 17 lol. The reason I think that is because the risk for skin cancer on down the road is higher if you start tanning before age 24. BUT, that's just my opinion and only you know what's best for your child!

I agree with bronze heels, it is your decision, but I personally wouldn't let mine tan at that age. To me, basically, it's almost like getting a tattoo in a sense. Sometimes at 14 what we'd choose to do to our bodies isn't what we'd choose in adulthood or even a couple months later. There isn't any taking back the experience of having done it, and I wouldn't want my child holding it against me later for "letting" them tan.

I was 16, and irresponsible about it. I'd buy unlimited monthly packages and go everyday, even if I burned. I wouldn't let my child go until they're 18, based on my own experience, and based on all of the studies that show a link between young people and melanoma.

I was 40 the first time I tanned indoors. It was 1998. I had recently become a group exercise instructor. No one wants to see the guy exercise instructor with pale hairy legs in front of the class on a mike....
But I tanned outdoors (intentionally) starting around age 13 or 14. And spent my summers outdoors from around age 8.

I deliberately started laying out in the sun when I was about 13 years old, but I spent most of my summers on the beach as a kid because my grandparents had a cottage on the lake near us. I'm 54 years old, and indoor tanning didn't start until I was in college. They originally had these UVB booths that you could only be in for a max of 5 minutes or you'd fry. You had to use the UVB to trigger melanin production, and then you could tan in the UVA bed. Then they came out with the beds where you tanned for 30 minutes! Tanning sure has changed since then! As far as allowing children to tan, I've never had kids, but if I had, I probably would've let them start at 16 or 17, but back then, nobody knew the dangers of tanning!

I was about 19 when I first started tanning in a bed. It was at the recommendation of my dermatologist for a skin condition. It wasn't until the age of about 21 that I started going more often for cosmetic reasons. I never really laid out in the sun much because I was always outside and was really dark from it. I wasn't until I started working third shift that I became pale, and decided I needed to hit a tanning bed more than twice a week.

I started tanning when I was 20. I had never even thought of trying to get a tan before because I thought I couldn't; my mom is the type that would slather SPF 50 on me every single day during the summer and if I turned even slightly red she would give me this huge lecture. Anyway, my sister was really into indoor tanning so I thought I would give it a try and to my surprise I got a nice little tan for my skin color! I've taken breaks here and there but I'm starting to get back into it now because I want some color for the spring and summer

I was 22. In Chicago they passed a law last year where anyone under 18 cannot tan in a bed even with parental consent they won't allow it.
I actually started tanning because every summer I would burn, and the summer before I started tanning I burned so bad I had 2nd degree burns. My shoulders and upper back had huge blisters and it was so painful I didn't sleep for a week. So I decided to try tanning. I have yet to burn in the summer when we're outside all day.
When I first started the salon I went to was no help and I used to be careless and go for way too long and burn a bit, but now I tan heavily in the spring to bronze up for summer and go here and there in the summer then a bit heavier in late fall when my summer tan starts to fade a bit. But I've learned to take it slow.

Thanks for all your replies. It seems the consensus is to have her wait. She's not really sure if she wants to anyway, she keeps going back and forth, so I think she's more curious about it than anything else. Someone mentioned tanning being like getting a tattoo and I had to smile, lol, because my 22 year old daughter, myself, and my 15 year old are planning on getting matching tattoo's this summer. I guess I've always been kind of a laid-back mom.
