I used to tan so easily, 20 minutes on each side using Australian Gold Tan Accelerator and I'd have a deep, dark, bronze tan(I'm sure my Italian & Sicilian skin tone played a factor in the tanning process as well ) But lately, I'm not tanning like I used to, or even at all..Past few times I went in the pool I used raw coconut oil to tan with no sunscreen, and after being out there for a couple hours(about 2-4 hrs give or say) I would have a very faint tan line where my top ties around my neck and my girls...Which disappeared after a few hours..Whilst, my son(4 yrs old) who was in the pool with me was covered head to toe in Coppertone SPF 50 and when we got out, he had tan lines and a nice tan, and I didn't have any new color... I'm wondering is it possible for your melanin to go away or is it possible that you could like ruin it from tanning so often without sunscreen in earlier years? I mean, if that's not possible, then what is the problem and why can't I tan at all lately?

Hey,
You are asking an interesting question. Not sure why, you are not getting instant color. With your Mediterranean lineage (Sicilian & Italian background) you should be "bronzed beyond belief" after only a few minutes in the direct sun. I have always been jealous of people like yourself who can develop the beautiful deep tan relatively easily. From your description you were an "avid tanner" sometime in the past and I believe you should be able to attain color easily without much effort.
Have you changed any prescription medications or started taking any new supplements? Have you discussed this issue with your primary health care professional or asked your dermatologist? The medical people would most likely say "GREAT - YOU DON'T NEED TO BE OUT IN THE SUN ANYWAY[/b]".
I am an avid tanner. Would like to hear from you if you are able to figure out or find out what is causing your inability to tan. I know in every salon I have been in there are the "Rules of Indoor Tanning". One of the last rules is "IF you cannot acquire a tan in the sun, then you most likely will not acquire a tan using this tanning bed". In other words - there are conditions that do not permit people to acquire a tan - in your instance I do not have any idea to assist you. Wish I knew of something.
Have a great day & let me know if you find out anything.
Enjoy tanning.

One thing I have noticed with other people anecdotally is that if they don't consistently tan in moderation, sometimes they lose their ability to as they get older. No idea why it happens for some people. But I'm sure if you just keep at it you'll eventually get color. Maybe try going to tanning beds as well? Mixing both usually yields the best results.

If you've not been regularly tanning sometimes those melanin bits just need to be re-awoken. I'd try sunbeds slowly upping your minutes and use a good lotion like melanoboost.
