ACCELERATORS/MAXIMIZERS/INTENSIFIERS
This type of formula does not feature any Bronzing, Tingling or Cooling effects. Most new tanners should start with these to grow your base tan. The best way to get your darkest tan is to use 1/2 - 3/4 oz of lotion before each tanning session. These will assist your natural tanning process, helping to develop your tan naturally.
BRONZERS
These use an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (commonly known as DHA). The goal is to give a tanner the "Immediate Tanning Results" of a sunless tanning ingredient with the heat of the tanning bed before their tan has time to darken naturally. Bronzers should be put on evenly. Wash hands after applying lotion to prevent streaking on your palms. The heat of the tanning bed helps the bronzers develop a natural-looking, fast tan. Note that DHA bronzers should be used sparingly and in rotation with non-DHA lotions; too much DHA will cause you to look orange, especially if you have red undertones in your skin.
NATURAL BRONZERS
These lotions are very similar to the Bronzers mentioned above. However, they do not have DHA in them. Some natural Bronzers include caramel and walnut oil. They might have erythrulose, which is similar to DHA; however, many tanners do not consider eryth to be a "heavy" Bronzer as it does not last as long as DHA. Also, it has less of a chance of causing you to look orange.
TINGLES
These lotions use the ingredient Methyl Nicotinate to cause a skin "irritation" which is actually your blood rising to the surface of your skin. It will make your skin appear red, but it is not a sunburn and will fade within 2-6 hours. It stimulates a micro-circulation to increase oxygen supply to the skin. Tingles are great for breaking a plateau in which you feel you aren't getting any darker. However, note that tingles do just that: tingle. Light tingles may just be a slight itching sensation. Advanced tingles might make you feel like a burn victim! Test one area of your skin with a new tingle, such as a leg, to gauge your skin's reception of the tingle.
COOLINGS
Now a new popular effect in lotions, instead of a hot tingle, tanners can have a choice for a relaxing tanning session where the lotion creates a cooling effect along with ingredients to moisturize your skin and develop and maintain your tan. The ingredient that causes this sensation is Menthol or Menthyl Lactate. It feels similar to Icy Hot or other cooling medical creams.
WARMINGS
Warming lotions give tanners the desired warmth while they're tanning without the painful itch that comes from tingles. They're a popular "medium ground" between regular lotions and tingles.
BLUSHES
Blush lotions create a slight reddening effect to the skin, causing you to look a little flushed. There is no warming or tingle feeling.
COMBOS
Combination lotions combine a bronzer or accelerator with another type of lotion, such as a tingle, cooling, warming, or blush. A Tingling Bronzer is for tanners to see instant redness after tanning combined with immediate tanning results by evening from the Bronzing ingredients. A Cooling Bronzer avoids the overheated feeling of tanning with immediate tanning results that evening from the Bronzing ingredients to help you tan naturally. So on and so forth.
AFTER TAN MOISTURIZERS
Tanning lotion companies will release after tan moisturizers with ingredients to help extend your tan. Moisturizers can be used anytime you want during the day, even immediately after tanning.
