It's been 4 years since I have taught an aerobics class. (Though I have been DOING group exercise classes 2 - 3 times a week) and observing the BEST Instructors.
I have an audition at a local gym where I have never taught class (not my gym, where I have taught before), next Wednesday. I have not had to audition since 2000.
I am a bit nervous, and planning/practicing for my audition this weekend. Yes, I have taught 1,000's of classes between 1995 and 2010 so I think it will be fine.... but it has been a while.
Teaching group exercise (aerobics) class is one of my passions (yes that's where "aero" in aeroguy comes from). I was considered pretty good, last time I was teaching class, up until 2010. I have taught Hi-Lo Floor aerobics, Step aerobics, cardio kickbox, body sculpting, and Interval classes. I have taught at Princeton University, Bally's, LA Fitness, and a bunch of smaller gyms, including one I owned in 2002-2004. I started teaching exercise class later in life, and taught my first class at age 37
What do you ladies who are group exercise participants think of an older guy instructor teaching your classes? I am 56 now (will be 57 in April). Do you like the idea? Would it bother you?
Thoughts please.

I don't do group exercise, but I wouldn't be opposed to having an older male instructor! I hope you get it! Be sure to let us know how it goes!

I need to rehearse - like any performer. It IS a performance. A solo performance of your own created choreography while teaching/cueing at 150 beats per minute and watching participants (for safety and if they are getting the routine) behind you in 3 walls of mirrors. I LOVE it when I am PREPARED. It's the only thing I have ever found that keeps my mind and body so engaged that I can not think of anything else going on in my life for that hour. It's almost like a meditation. A zoned out meditation. Wile burning 500-600 calories.

I used to do choreography for cheer squads when I was fresh out of high school and into college for some extra cash. I definitely sympathize with having to keep up with what you're doing and still be able to watch the people behind you in the mirrors!

The audition for group exercise instructor yesterday went well enough. After the audition I told the group exercise director that I had not taught a class in 4 years. Then she said, "You are a little rusty". Fair enough. She has asked me to attend her Cardio Kick box and tone class on Friday morning where she will introduce me to her members and have me teach one or two cardio kick combos in her class. After that, I am on the sub list for the gym. So I am on my way back to active group exercise instructor!!!!! Maybe I can lose this extra 5-10 pounds of holiday fat I have accumulated on my tummy over the last 2-3 months.

Update.
I had to cancel this mornings attend / co-teach cardio kick box....
Long story, but I hurt my knee yesterday. Not too bad, just over extended it climbing out of a truck, evidently the wrong way....
SO probably best not to kick box on it today. I can walk, and I only feel it a little.... Probably be fine in a couple of days. Then I will call her (the group exercise director) next week to rearrange the class intro / co-teach.
