Ok so yesterday was first time ever in a tanning bed. No clue what I'm doing lol. I wear prescription glasses and when I got in the bed with my eye protection I couldnt see any of the buttons ( blind as a bat). I barely found the start button. So my question is can I adjust the fan buttons before I switch from glasses to eye protection and get in or does the door have to be closed? I'm so lost. Also reference. I do tan at planet fitness (laydown bed for 5 minutes) so if anyone could give me any advice on how to progress beds or what the buttons amd numbers on the bed display are that would be great.

Hi Kitty, Welcome to the world of indoor tanning! As for the eye protection, if you’re willing to invest in your own, the “Wink-Ease” on Amazon might be a good choice. Wink-Ease are translucent, oval shaped pieces of very thin, pliable plastic that you fold into cone shapes. There’s a line of lightweight adhesive along the edge so each one stays in place over your eyes but are very easily removed. They might have these for sale (disposable, one time use only) at the front desk of your gym, and if so, give them a try. I find they offer far better visibility than traditional tanning goggles. If you like them, you can get a pack of 50 pairs for $13 on Amazon (other lotion vendors carry them as well). You can put them over your eyes, hold your glasses up to your eyes to see what buttons you’re pressing and the numbers on the digital display, and go from there. Without knowing what kind of bed you’re using I’m not sure whether you can adjust fans and so forth, but I think the Wolff beds I used to use years ago did allow users to start/adjust the fan before starting the bed itself. (In fact, I recall the bed shutting off and just laying there, dozing for a few minutes afterward with the fan running… tanning is relaxing and addictive! lol) You might want to see if a staff member can give you more info on that. Here on the forum (I think right here in this “general tanning” section) is a “sticky” thread with really helpful guidelines for beginners. I tanned regularly for a few years in the mid 90s, and occasional intermittent periods throughout the 00s and 10s, so I consider myself fairly experienced but even I needed a refresher! This is actually a really good time of year to start tanning. If you live in an area that has shorter days and cold winters, you can start building a base tan, and by October/November you’ll be able to bask in the “sunlight”. (It feels really indulgent to lay in a warm tanning bed and get that heat and bright light on your skin for 15 minutes! ) Hopefully others will chime in as well with some helpful tips. Happy tanning!

I always start it and adjust fans before I put on goggles. I never trip whether I get a little UV in my eyes for a few seconds and been tanning for 16 years. It's not going to blind you, I just wouldn't make a habit of it, certainly don't stare at the bulbs or in the future who knows what happens. 😆 My vision has actually improved from the time I began tanning to now. It's common for eye prescriptions to improve with age, but point being I haven't incurred tanning related damage.
