IUD?

To all of the ladies, does anyone here have an IUD for birth control? I have been on some form of the pill since I was 13 for super heavy periods. I've gotten sick of taking the pill everyday and I also have irregular bleeding during my cycle. I made an appointment last month to talk to my OB/GYN about getting an IUD. She said even though I've never had children, she could still place an IUD but warned me it may be very painful during the procedure. My insurance is paying for the entire procedure, even if I do decide to get it removed, so I've made my appointment to have it placed at the end of this month. I've known a few ladies who have had kids and haven't had kids and love their IUDs. I'm just tired of taking a pill everyday and my boyfriend and I do not want children, so I want to know I'll be covered for the next five years. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi, guy here. My wife had an IUD implanted about a year ago. It has been great for her. Non-existent periods and haven't had any pregnancy scares. Her OB/GYN actually was surprised she wanted one because I guess typically women who are done having children get the IUD's. We aren't planning on having children so its been great. She said when she had it implanted it hurt pretty bad and she had to rest for half a day or so with ibuprophen. It does need to be checked at the annual physical and replaced every 5 years. I haven't had a problem with it except I can feel it once in a while during sex. I know this is coming from a guys point of view but hope that gives you some info. I appreciate your response so much, tannaked! Thank you for giving a male's perspective on this. I'm glad it has gone well with your wife in getting her IUD. I'm trying to prepare myself for the pain part of all of this.

I just had the mirena installed (installed? Lol) and it wasn't too painful at the time. I did have a baby fairly recently though.

I had an IUD implanted when I was 18, I'm 22 now, the only issue I've had is some slight migration due to intense workouts and jiu jitsu. Besides that, my only advice would be to go with the non hormonal option, I did a lot research on both and the hormonal one had many more risks.

Also, I've never had kids and my IUD is good for 10 years.

I have heard mixed reviews on this. A friend of mine had one and the IUD had somehow made its way into her hip tissue and the tissue began to grow around it. She ended up having to get it surgically removed and it was not fun. I'm not trying to scare you but she is a nurse and she is against it. Apparenlty she knows of people who have still gotten pregnant because it has moved. Just research it before hand and make sure whoever is placing it knows what they are doing.

I have an IUD and have had it 4 years now. I got the mirena which lasts 5 years. I've had almost no problems with it except for a week or 2 of sparatic sharp pains in my lower stomach area. The dr checked me and they went away. I have not had my period since 2010 !!!!! I get a little spotting every so often but nothing that would even get on my panties. I love it and am considering getting another one when this ones time is up.

I also had the mirenia. It worked great for about 3 years and then I started having issues with it (but that's more due to my endometriosis). I would definitely recommend it.
Oh and I have no kids (I know often people assume it's only used for those with kids).
There's also a new one (Skyla I think) which is the same as mirenia but works for 3 years and is better for those without kids desiring more short term relief.

I get intense cramps that last for a few days out of the month and usually last for a couple of hours until I take Advil or something else to make it go away.

I haven't had one and I won't. A friend of the family had one and it migrated and she almost had to have a hysterectomy. She's actually a Dr. herself and went to a reliable place to have it done. I've also known a couple of people that still got pregnant and had an IUD lodged up there during the pregnancy and were scared to death. Everyone has a different experience, but personally it's too risky for me.
